Tuesday, April 29: Trojan Evolve: Music with a Mission with Soul Rebels Brass Band, The bALLY Who? with special guest Theresa Andersson and The Revivalists
Imagine
blending the sounds of Mardi Gras funk, soft rock, and reggae so
seemingly it defies category. Now shrink that idea into a eight-piece
ensemble, add a hip hop sensibility plus a hundred years of New Orleans
jazz tradition, and you’ll get the Louisiana sound known as the Soul Rebels. This shrewd crew of college trained multi-instrumentalists are forcing listeners to “Let your mind be free” as they “Work it out” on the dance floor. There music
is utterly uplifting and hard core leaving fans with a myriad of intrinsic sounds and songs to enjoy.
The
Soul Rebels were destined for success. After parading around the
streets of New Orleans in the traditions of the second line and jazz
funerals, the Soul Rebels began their professional debut with the famed
Neville Brothers in New Orleans at the Hot Spot Tipitina’s! The Soul
Rebels rocked so hard and so strong they continued opening for the
Neville Brothers and beyond. The bands hard funk groove has landed them
gigs as an opening act for: Bootsy Collins, A Tribe Called Quest,
Better than Ezra, Counting Crows, The Fugees, Digital Underground, The
Roots, Brand New Heavies, The Gap Band and Robert Plant & Jimmy
Page just to name a few. The Soul Rebels have traveled the US and
abroad, bringing their live and uncut rhythms as far as England, Italy,
and France.
Perhaps
there latest album, “Rebelution” says it all. The Souls Rebels have
rebelled against the music world rapping, soul shouting, and blasting
out an assault of what is, in the truest possible way, unquestionably
the hottest dance sound around. Get ready to party like never before
with a visit by the Soul Rebels.
The bALLY who?
We, The bALLY who?, are proud to present a conglomeration of ripples of
ideas. We are proud to present a convergence of those ideas so that
they build the kind of tidal wave worth riding. Striving to celebrate a
holy matrimony of art forms – music, film, theatre, art, puppetry, and
frolic. We are in search of nothing less than the first rung of a
ladder taking us to a new summit, the first knot of a lasso helping us
to reel in the moon, the stars, and all things seemingly unattainable,
wildest dreams included.
Wildest Dreams – both ours and yours. While we shall continue to push
ourselves to arrive at an un-chartered zenith, we also humbly nominate
our services with an offertory, a proposition, an invitation, if you
will, you will. We invite you not only to join us, but also to direct
us, to guide us along the path of YOUR wildest dreams, and we promise
to accompany those visions of yours with our boldest efforts.
Specifically we are for hire to assist you with artistic direction and
creative invention for crawfish boils, barbecues, barmitfahs, birthday
parties, romantic dinners, lifetime achievement awards ( all award
ceremonies, for that matter), anniversaries, slumber parties, nature
hikes, cross country road trips, athletic and academic events alike. We
are willing to run marathons.
We, The bALLY who ?, are indeed a powerful outcry, and we are raising
our voices in Yea Saying Support of a word far too often misused AND
overused. A word whose punch has lost quite a good bit of its power,
due largely in part to bumper stickers, tennis shoe commercials, and a
non-chalant yet constant tossing around of the word with insincerity
and cheapness. As a result of all this, the word’s gusto has been
replaced with gas. We, The bALLY who ?, are currently in search for
this sacred word’s long lost gusto; we have high hopes of revitalizing
every powerless punch. This way to Revolution, once again. Here, to
Revolution once again.
Theresa Andersson
Theresa recently recorded her newest album in her kitchen. The record
was produced by Swedish singer-songwriter/producer Tobias Froberg
(Peter Moren’s upcoming solo album) and mixed by Linus Larsson (Peter
Bjorn and John, Mercury Rev.) Theresa played all the instruments on the
album except for a duet with legendary New Orleans producer and
composer Allen Toussaint (The Meters, Dr. John, The Band, Elvis
Costello) and a duet with Norwegian singer Ane Brun. Due for release
Summer 2008!
The Revivalists
The Revivalists’ Dave Shaw (vocals/guitar) arrived in New Orleans from
Columbus, Ohio in September 2007. After a few years of filling concert
halls with his accomplished group, The Summit Brothers, Dave decided to
leave it all behind in search of something new and unique. New Orleans
was the destination and music was the motivation. This was not an easy
decision considering his recent media exposure and radio contest
success in Columbus with Local Station, WBZX 99.7 The Blitz, Acoustic
Idol. After two weeks of living and loving in New Orleans Dave stepped
outside to enjoy the sunshine, sip on lemonade, and play some tunes on
his front porch facing the neighborhood cemetery. By chance, Zack
Feinberg (guitar) happened to be riding his bicycle past the scene.
Zack stopped in his tracks upon hearing this soulful shirtless tattooed
fellow belting his heart out. Zack’s compliment, “you’ve got a great
voice, you’ve got soul”, led to Dave’s inquiry, “Do you play music?”
Thus marks the beginning of the Revivalists’ musical journey. Mike Brun
(Bass/Vocals) and Andrew Campanelli (Drums) came into the picture very
soon after - both were already close friends and musical mates of
Zack’s: Mike is a fellow classmate and collaborator with Zack at Tulane
University and a singer-songwriter of his own right. Andrew and Zack
met at the musician’s clinics at the famed venue, Tipitina’s. There
they studied and played along side New Orleans legends such as Johnny
Vidacovich and George Porter Jr. Their friendship developed based
around a shared love of the New Orleans music scene and their desire to
perform. As a band, The Revivalists show an eclectic repertoire of
originals and their own unique spin on a wide range of covers. Their
influences range from American Roots music, Blues, Rock, Funk, Jazz and
many other improvisational styles. This open minded group draws on many
different genres and styles while also creating a sound of their own.
Brun, at the age of twenty has directed choral groups in both
Philadelphia and New Orleans. He brings a deep knowledge of theory and
solid bass lines to The Revivalists’ sound. On guitar, Zack Feinberg,
writes and plays creatively employing finger-style, tapping, and
percussive approaches. Andrew Campanelli always holds the groove and
brings progressive ideas to the arrangements. Dave Shaw’s vocals are
the finest you will hear in Rock Music and his songwriting follows
suit, however, all members of The Revivalists contribute their own
material and play multiple instruments. Their energetic live shows have
quickly generated a loyal following and garnered much attention in New
Orleans.
