Friday, December 29: Catch Velvet - Original Lineup (One Night Only)
Catch Velvet
The group rocks hard, but manages to show well-trained restraint. There are slick drum rhythms, prog-rock background vocals, and an ever-present driving force of warm chugging guitars. Matched with superb bass lines and the group comes together as a solid, hard rock unit with just the right hint of sweetness required by radio PDs. Each song alternates fluid rhythms with timely bursts of guitar power pop, and the vocals leave you humming as you hit replay on the CD. Ducro, who cites influences from Christina Aguilera to Meshuggah, met with former Ugly Kid Joe guitarist and present Evanescence producer, Dave Fortman, to engineer and co-produce the band's debut CD, Catch Velvet. Fortman was so impressed he forwarded the single "Alone In Here" to music industry contacts in L.A. This hook-driven rock quartet is consistently packing shows around the New Orleans area. In February of 2001, they were invited to perform at the Rod Ryan Morning Show's First Anniversary Party for KKND 106.7FM. The Times Picayune's music editor, Keith Spera, featured the band in the July 27th, 2001 edition of Lagniappe. The debut also reached the #8 position of "Best Local CDs of 2001" in Lagniappe, (1/25/02, p.20). In May, 2002, Catch Velvet were invited to play with national artists, Sugar Ray, at the House of Blues - over 750 in attendance - and in August, 2002, Catch Velvet were invited to headline.Since Queyrouze's departure in 2002, the group has continued to write, record and perform at bigger venues across the southern region. Catch Velvet has performed with Oleander, Shiner, Econoline Crush, The Living End, Crossfade and the reunited Poison (sold out). An ardent local fan base has been generating a regional buzz about the most consistent hard rock act to come from the Home of Jazz. Catch Velvet ‘s debut and their newer 4-song offering, "One for the Road," are as catchy a collection of power pop to ever come from New Orleans. If these eight tracks are an indication of what will be on their in-progress album, Catch Velvet will regain what momentum they lost due to their 2005 Hurrication.
Emilia In the past year, while getting her own album underway, Emilia has had the opportunity to record a kirtan with Krishna Das, Walter Becker, and Rick Allen and, in Seattle, work and record with Michael Shrieve, Shawn Smith, and KJ Sawka. Presently Emilia is eagerly waiting for kick ass producer TJ Rehmi to finish her first solo album after recording at his studio in England in January of 2006. With help from TJ Rehmi, Real World, and Manhattan based 5 Points Records, the world wide release of her album will be turning heads. Emilia now has drumming madman KJ Sawka, Kent Halvorsen bangin on Keys, and guitar genius Micheal Queyrouze pushing the sweet sounds on stage with her. The band has started playing in the Seattle area recently, and are making big waves already. |
